Barbados
Spaniards first, and Portugueses later, briefly claimed Barbados during 16th and 17th centuries but it was British governance that perdured the longest, making Barbados the only Caribbean island that did not change hands during the colonial period.
Inhabited since pre-columbian times by Arawakan speaking tribes the island was called originally Ichirouganaim meaning "Red land with white teeth" or "Redstone island with teeth outside", a reference to the white reefs (teeth) that surround the island.
